Chiropractic is a primary treatment alternative to the use of drugs or surgery, and can also complement your medical treatment to provide relief for musculoskeletal symptoms.
Chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.
This manual approach helps to treat conditions related to the spine, pelvis, joints of the extremities and nervous system.
Decreased joint motion, (often called joint restrictions or vertebral subluxations) causes inflammation, pain, muscle tension and biomechanical changes and may interfere with the function of the nervous system.
Joint restrictions occur as a result of the stresses and strains of everyday living; such as poor or prolonged postures (long commutes, desk jobs, “text neck”, slouching on the couch), job-related activities and repetitive movements (typing, using a mouse, computer work, lifting), falls or accidents (especially car accidents) and sports activities.
In children, muscle and joint dysfunction may occur as a result of everything from in-utero constraint, the birth process, postural imbalances and learning to crawl and walk to childhood activities. Poor sleeping posture, carrying school bags, schoolwork, homework and screen time postures can all contribute to muscle and joint dysfunction.
Also, as your pets may experience joint restrictions from slips, trauma, poor fitting harnesses and collars, poor leash habits, quick changes in direction, confinement, advancing age and post-surgery, chiropractic can aid in the well-being of your pets as well.
The most common signs of muscle and joint dysfunction are:
- pain
- headaches
- stiffness or tension
- decreased range of motion
- weakness
- numbness and tingling
Most patients (including people and animals) have dysfunction in the muscles and joints long before they notice any symptoms. Research shows it often takes 80% dysfunction before the brain registers pain signals. Early preventive maintenance can address this dysfunction before compensatory or degenerative changes and symptoms occur.
A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) will evaluate the joint motion in the spine (neck, back and pelvis) and extremities (wrists, elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees, hips) and then correct these joint restrictions by highly skilled adjustments (quick, gentle thrusts).
Chiropractic adjustments have been proven to increase motion, coordination and circulation and to reduce swelling, muscle spasms and pain.
At in balance, we also offer soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, nutrition and lifestyle counseling, modalities, kinesiology taping and rehabilitation exercises as part of the treatment plan.
In addition, physiotherapy, massage therapy and osteopathy are a great complement to chiropractic treatment so we will work collaboratively with your practitioners or give you a referral.
